In the waiting room

What Have You Decided?

As each year draws to a close, it’s natural to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re heading. For many retirees and returning immigrants, this can be a time of transition, reflection, and planning. What is it that you’re waiting for, and what steps are you taking in this season of life?

A dear friend of mine recently shared her story with me. She spends her days by her brother’s bedside in palliative care, hoping to ease his journey, even as she faces the heartbreak of losing him. For her, this period is one of immense waiting, filled with memories, moments, and a painful anticipation of what’s to come. It’s the kind of waiting that brings deep reflections about family, love, and purpose.

For me, my wait is different. I am waiting for a response from someone who has always inspired me, hoping to receive their support so I can continue impacting others through my work. With each passing day, my hope grows stronger because I know that even in the waiting room, I can still plan, dream, and contribute in my way.

Some are waiting for the next phase—a new role, a family reunion, a positive step forward in their journey. If you look deeply, you may also find that you, too, are in a waiting room of sorts. You could be waiting for that big decision to retire, or perhaps you’re planning to return to a homeland you haven’t seen in years. The waiting room holds us all, but what we do with our time there makes all the difference.

Making the Waiting Room Work for You

It’s easy to feel anxious, even fearful, as you wait for life’s next big change. But the waiting room can also be a space for planning, preparing, and growing. Use this time to assess your dreams, your goals, and the legacy you want to leave behind. Whether you’re gearing up for retirement or returning home, this is your moment to become stronger, clearer, and more purposeful.

Some people allow waiting to freeze them in place, while others take it as an opportunity to prepare for their next steps. Just like Nelson Mandela, who transformed his prison cell into a mental fortress for eventual victory, we, too, can turn our waiting rooms into spaces of potential. It’s a chance to plan our own positive outcomes, or if things don’t go as hoped, to chart a new course with resilience.

A Mindset of Limitless Possibility

When you’re clear about what you want, waiting becomes more than just a pause—it becomes the prelude to action. Our lives and our futures are in our own hands; it’s a powerful truth that #YHTK (You Hold The Key). Your life, your dreams, your next chapter—they are all within your control. And just as you’re in the waiting room now, you can decide what you want to achieve as you step out.

Whether you’re embarking on a new chapter back in your homeland, embracing retirement, or simply waiting for the next opportunity, stay focused and remember: the power lies within you. Don’t let the waiting room define you; use it as a launchpad to greater things. Your life, your terms—what will you do with this time?

We’d love to hear your waiting room experiences and the lessons you’ve drawn from them. What have you learned about yourself? What are you preparing for? Let’s share and grow together.
