Midnight Hour

As we wrapped up the care training class tonight, one of the key concepts we discussed was reflection—and wow, did I reflect!

I was taken back to my days working at Schneider Electric. Money was tight, and it was a constant juggling act. By the time my paycheck hit, the direct debits were lined up, ready to drain my account. My sister and I were both working night shifts, and we had to be strategic to make it through the month—fueling the car, buying groceries, keeping the kids in school, and managing all the other expenses.

We knew that the paycheck would land at midnight, so at 11:45 p.m., we’d take our break and head to the cashpoint. The goal was to withdraw the cash before the direct debit could take its share. It felt like a race, and anytime we managed to get the money out first, it was like winning the lottery! Were we going to pay the bill? Yes, but the timing had to be on our terms. It was too late to call the companies and request a delay, so we turned it into a little game. Believe it or not, we actually looked forward to it on payday nights.

Now, looking back, these moments have become my reflections—memories of navigating a non-mundane life during my working years.

Today, as I train caregivers, it brings me so much joy to offer a holistic approach—teaching not just the principles and practice of care, but also how to manage themselves financially. We talk about avoiding debt accumulation and planning for retirement early. If your bills are piling up, don’t bury your head in the sand. Reach out to your utility companies, set up a payment or budget plan, and if needed, ask for a rollover. What you don’t do is stay silent. Keep communication open with your creditors to show you’re still credible, even in tough times.

Got your first job? Start thinking about your last job, too. Start building those passive income streams now—because last-minute planning definitely isn’t for everyone.
